"From an early age I fell deeply in love with music, and the performance of it after listening to the definitive collection of Stevie Wonder. I was playing in restaurants and private events at 14.
Inspired by Jim Croce, John Legend, The Beatles, and of course Stevie Wonder, music was in my blood.
I wouldn’t be where I am without each individual who has helped me along the way, showed me different genres, and mentored me.
Busking on the streets of Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City, brought a new level of connection with music.
Fast forward, playing in the local open mic scene of Chicago brought a sense of community and awareness of the eclectic range of styles performed in the city.
After playing at many different levels and taking on different requests, at a speakeasy in Woodstock IL, Redhead Piano Bar, and Drew’s on Halsted, Stephen is just getting started. ‘Chicago is home, and I’m a Chicagoan.’ "

Tack Room veteran piano man S. Joel Norman makes his long awaited and triumphant return for a very special holiday spectacular! Get ready to hoot, holler, and deck the halls because Reindeer Room will be getting raucous for this one.
S. Joel Norman first began playing music at age four at the piano. “Mom probably got sick of me pounding on her antique piano as a toddler, so she put me in lessons,” he says. Hailing from the south suburbs of Chicago, Norman got his musical start playing and composing gospel music in the church. “Some of the guys who played were also working musicians, and after playing a couple Sunday mornings, they asked me to come play on Saturday nights with them. I was only in junior high.”He went on to study and graduate from Wheaton Conservatory of Music, where he began composing and arranging pieces for orchestra, chorus, and jazz ensemble.He’s toured worldwide with a variety of artists and played alongside jazz greats Ira Sullivan and Marquis Hill, as well as rock and roll heroes Billy Ozzello (Survivor) and Chip Znuff (Enuff Znuff), and went on the road playing keyboards with Eddie Money. Joel was the resident artist at some of Chicago’s finest venues, including Soho House, The Hoxton, and Tack Room at Thalia Hall, as well as residencies in Manhattan and the Virgin Islands. He’s led worship at the largest RCA church in the world, and scored plays for Arena Theater and The University of Chicago’s Shakespeare program. Produced and performed hundreds of tracks for fellow artists and he is currently writing and recording music for upcoming albums, commercials, film, and television.

Olivia Flanigan, a Chicago-based singer-songwriter, debuts her album, Girl on Flood Records, on Friday, March 26, 2021.The music exhibits a bit of art-pop intermingling, with strong undercurrents of jazz/soul and late 60s Motown inspiration in the instrumentation. Her backing band consists of seasoned Chicago improvisers providing captivating instrumental solos, harmonies, and strong grooves.

They say it’s never too late to follow your dreams. But can a middle-aged woman take her Blues & Soul all the way to Europe? Can she rediscover her creativity amidst the drear of pandemic life in the Midwest? Over twenty years into her career, can she set aside practicality for the sake of passion?
Those are the questions Denise La Grassa is exploring in her upcoming documentary film, Northof 40.
An energetic, multi-talented performer and polymath musician who brings her soulful blues to
the Tack Room on October 20th, Denise’s artistic impulses have found many outlets over the
years.
Her resume boasts supporting role in an HBO movie starring Anthony Edwards, appearances on the TV drama Unsolved Mysteries, numerous musical and other stage productions around her hometown Chicago, and several original one-woman social commentary musical shows. Most recently as the head of the Lincoln College Music Program, she engineered the successful transformation of a Jazz Studies focus to a modern Music, Business, and Production degree tracks.
But with the closing of that small Central IL school and these accomplishments in her rearview mirror, Denise finds herself asking: now what?
North of 40 will document Denise’s journey with her new soulful blues sound and new band,
beginning with smaller venues around Chicago and downstate as she works to get the attention of larger venues and festivals. The dream is a return to Europe, where she staged her one- person musical show, Bite, in the 1990s and where she performed her music at venues there. The film will also detail the hard work required of anyone trying to make a name for themselves in the music business—especially women of “a certain age.” It’s a story many who long for a life change can relate to: Follow a passion sans a safety net, or a financially secure path that starves the soul.
